Receipt Paper Size Guide: Width, Length, Diameter & Core

A paper-roll description contains several dimensions. Understanding each one helps prevent ordering a roll that is too wide or too large for the printer.

Quick answer: Start with paper type and width. Then verify outside roll diameter, roll length, and core size. A matching width alone does not guarantee the roll will fit.

What Each Measurement Means

Specification Meaning Why it matters
Width Side-to-side measurement of the paper. The roll must fit the printer's paper path.
Length How many feet or meters of paper are wound on the roll. Longer rolls last longer but may create a larger outside diameter.
Outside diameter Total diameter of the finished roll. The printer compartment must physically accommodate it.
Core size Diameter/design of the tube or center opening. Can affect fit in devices with spindles or tight paper paths.
Paper type Thermal, bond, carbonless, etc. Must match the printer technology.

How to Measure an Existing Roll

  1. Measure the paper width across the face of the roll.
  2. Measure the outside diameter from edge to edge through the center.
  3. Check the core opening or core specification.
  4. Read any size information printed on the box or wrapper.
  5. Confirm the printer model and compare its media specification.
