Thermal vs. Bond vs. Carbonless Receipt Paper

Choosing the correct paper starts with understanding how your printer makes the image.

Quick answer: Thermal paper reacts to heat from a thermal printhead and normally uses no ink ribbon. Bond paper is ordinary single-ply paper used in impact printers with a ribbon. Carbonless paper uses multiple chemically coated plies to create duplicate copies when struck by an impact print mechanism.

Compare the Three Types

Paper type How printing happens Typical use Ribbon?
Thermal Heat activates the coated paper. Front-counter receipts, payment terminals, many modern POS printers. No
1-ply bond Impact printhead strikes an ink ribbon against paper. Kitchen tickets, order printers, impact receipt printers. Yes
2-ply carbonless Impact printing creates an original plus duplicate copy through pressure-sensitive coated plies. Kitchens or workflows requiring duplicate tickets. Yes

Common Mistakes

Putting thermal paper in an impact printer

The printer may feed the roll, but the paper type does not match the printing method.

Putting bond paper in a thermal printer

A thermal printhead cannot create a normal image on ordinary bond paper.

Ignoring ribbon requirements

Impact printers need the correct ribbon cartridge in addition to the correct paper roll.
